Nominated for a record-breaking 16 Academy Awards, the film “Sinners” took home four, two behind Best Picture winner “One Battle After Another.” The film, set in 1930s Clarksdale, Mississippi, was filmed in multiple locations in south Louisiana.

Ryan Coogler won Best Original Screenplay, his first Oscar win, and Michael B. Jordan received the Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role, also his first. The two have collaborated together on most of Coogler’s movies, starting with “Fruitvale Station” and including “Creed” and “Black Panther.”

Art director Tim Davis helped create the church in ‘Sinners,’ and fans have analyzed its design. Miles Caton plays preacher boy Sammie in the film.
Louisiana artists and craftspeople made up the bulk of the crew, including much of the design, costume and makeup teams. Filming locations included Donaldsonville, Bogalusa, Thibodaux and St. Bernard, and the music rehearsals took place in New Orleans.
Although inspired by Coogler’s Mississippi roots, the movie was full of Louisiana soul and talent.
