Pond have released an uplifting, intriguing new single called ‘Terrestrials’, and announced new live shows supporting Djo.

The Australian five-piece are back with the new track, and it marks their first new material since they dropped their 10th studio album ‘Stung!’ back in summer 2024.

In the track, frontman Nicholas Allbrook and co. take on the nuanced and complicated theme of humanity – and how it is both capable of both love and cruelty.

It sees the band explore the contradictions rife in society, and how mankind has an unwavering appetite for both items of beauty, as well as items of destruction. “At the sight of the new moon/ The mongrels go berserk/ Baby wanna be weightless/ But it’s a contract signed at birth,” sings Allbrook, building towards the energetic chorus. “It’s all good/ She’ll be alright/Pray in the morning.”

“Gum [Jay Watson] wrote the music for this one and we recorded this in Mullumbimby with Julian Abbott at Nowave studio,” the singer said. “This song is about the weirdest of all the terrestrials, people. Hellbent on flying away from or killing our home soil, with a big appetite for destruction, guns, roses. We can love and connect and nurture and inflict unbearable cruelty.”

“You all know this but, yeah, it’s kind of a great mystery isn’t it? It’s almost more supernatural than extraterrestrials. Which is probably why we wrote this song,” Allbrook added. “There aren’t many of us who can forget for even a second about the unborn tomorrows and dead yesterdays but among them are, apparently, kids and people in love. My cousin Iz helped write this with our chats.”

As well as releasing new music, Pond have also announced that they will be bringing their live show on the road this summer, supporting Djo.

Alongside the singer, songwriter and Stranger Things star, real name Joe Keery, the band will be playing five new shows across the US, all taking place over the summer. These include an opening night in Pittsburgh, as well as stops in New York, Virginia and more.

The news of the new music and live shows follows on from members of Pond, as well as Tame Impala, Geese, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, all being spotted together in the studio.

Geese’s touring keyboardist Sam Revas posted a video on Instagram, showing Max Bassin and Emily Green jamming with members of Tame Impala, Pond, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard at a studio in Perth. Kevin Parker was spotted on guitar duties, with Pond members Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson, and James Ireland accompanying alongside King Gizz multi-instrumentalist Ambrose Kenny-Smith.

It isn’t too much of a surprise to see the bands working together, as Pond’s members are longtime touring bandmates with Tame Impala, while Kenny-Smith has collaborated with Watson on a 2024 album called ‘Ill Times’. Meanwhile, Geese have previously toured with King Gizzard, opening for them on the US leg of their 2024 tour.

Pond’s latest album, ‘Stung!’, So far, ‘Stung!’ followed on from the Aussie band’s 2021 record ‘9’. In a four-star review of that album, Rhys Buchanan wrote for NME: “It can be a risky game to throw yourself into so many different styles on a record, let alone within individual songs. Yet – from Bowie to Kurt Cobain and William Burroughs – artists of all kinds have found joy in such surrealist methods of cutting up their work and putting it back together.

“Having perhaps taken their psych-pop to the edges of what’s possible, Pond deserve this moment. Hopefully, it proves a gateway to a new era for the band that keeps on giving.”
