Author and columnist Shobhaa De has shared her review of Dhurandhar 2. She highlighted the performances of Arjun Rampal and Sanjay Dutt as the film’s standouts rather than the main lead, Ranveer Singh.
She expressed that, unlike the first part, she was not as enthusiastic about the sequel. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the much-anticipated film released in theatres on March 19.
First part more layered than sequel
In a video posted on her Instagram, Shobhaa said the original film was more layered, with psychological depth and suspense that made viewers curious about the characters’ motives.
She added that Dhurandhar 2 felt familiar and predictable. “Maybe it was the newness then, in this one, there was a bit of a deja vu. I could almost predict what’s going to happen next which is never good. Good cinema is about keeping you tense and making you wonder. People have called it a masterpiece. Sorry, it’s not a masterpiece, at least not for me,” she said.
Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt steal the show
Praising Arjun Rampal, Shobhaa said he “chewed up everyone, including Ranveer. Sorry Ranveer, but he did.” She described Sanjay Dutt’s performance as impeccable, menacing, and in control without a single false note.
Missing Akshaye Khanna’s Rehman Dakait
The columnist also noted the absence of Akshaye Khanna as Rehman Dakait in the sequel. She said, “Without Rehman Dakait, the style was not there. The wonderful impromptu dance was not there, there was a version of the Baloch dance, but it was nowhere near that one,” referring to the FA9LA dance number from the first film.
Shobhaa De offered some criticism for the film’s makers. She observed that many viewers were distracted, scrolling away and returning to the film, which she felt was not a sign of an engrossing movie.
Predictable script, lack of novelty
She added, “I didn’t honestly think much of the script this time. The music again predictable… This had no Ramba Ho Ho Ho, though I loved the way Rasputin was used. But there was no Shararat… There was no glamour at all… The jingoism was underlined in this but it was balanced.”
In her Instagram caption, she described the film as having too many explanations, comparing it to “tutoring school kids on how baddies operate.” She said the dialogues were obvious and spelt out for the audience, with too many tropes and cliches. The film, according to her, included action scenes for their own sake and frequent car explosions inspired by Rohit Shetty’s style.
She also remarked on small details, such as Ranveer’s hair being carefully styled even during intense fight scenes. She acknowledged a couple of clever twists but questioned the clarity of the film’s finale in Pathankot, calling it an “anti-climax.”
Dhurandhar 2 also features R Madhavan, Sara Arjun and Rakesh Bedi among others.
