Associates of Prince Harry have suggested that he is hoping for an invitation from his father, King Charles, to visit Sandringham this summer as part of efforts to mend their fractured relationship – but there are barriers due to his past behaviours. The potential invite comes as trust remains low among senior members of the monarchy towards Prince Harry.
The prince reportedly wishes to bring Meghan and their two children to Sandringham in July, when he is scheduled to return for the ‘One Year to Go’ Invictus Games event, with sources indicating Harry wants an “invitation” to see his father.
A friend of the King told the Daily Mail: “If Harry truly wishes to see his father, he would do well to encourage his supporters to allow such matters to be discussed privately, since low trust and bitter experience in this regard remains one of the principal barriers to progress.”
Tensions have arisen and trust reamins low after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit royal duties in 2020 and have since conducted widespread public TV interviews, with Harry additionally releasing a bombshell memoir titled Spare in 2023.
Harry’s departure from royal duties was also accompanied by a series of public criticisms of the institution, causing a potential setback to any reunion. Opinions of his time in the Firm were included in his Netflix show ‘Harry & Meghan’. Among many accusations in the memoir, Harry branded his stepmother, Queen Camilla ‘evil’, and alleged his brother had a physical altercation with him over his now wife.
The security question still remains central to any potential reunion. Harry is still awaiting a ruling from the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) on what level of police protection his family should receive when visiting the UK.
There was previously a suggestion that a decision was expected by the end of January, but no ruling has yet been issued.
Last year, Harry lost a legal challenge against the Government over security provision and subsequently wrote to the Home Secretary requesting a comprehensive risk assessment for his family.
Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, now aged six and four, have not seen King Charles in nearly four years.
Archie and Lili last met the King when the family travelled from California for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
The Duke of Sussex remains estranged from William and Catherine, who frequently spend their summer holidays at Anmer Hall, their country residence on the Norfolk estate in Sandringham.
