‘The Sacred Veil’
Dancers from the University of Oklahoma School of Dance and the Windsong Chamber Chorale perform “The Sacred Veil,” with choreography by Sophia Smith set on a choral work by Eric Whitacre, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. April 12 at Inspiration Point Center for the Arts, 16311 U.S. 62 West, Eureka Springs. It’s only the second presentation of the ballet, which Smith created in 2025. Whitacre wrote the choral work, originally commissioned by the Los Angeles Master Chorale and recorded in 2020, using a text by his friend, poet and medieval history professor Charles Anthony Silvestri, on the faculty at Washburn University. It reflects Silvestri’s journey toward healing after the death of his wife from cancer; the title refers to the boundary between the world of the living and what lies beyond.

ASO at UAMS
Musicians of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra perform works by Felix Mendelssohn and Edvard Grieg for the spring concert of the Dr. Ruth Marie Allen Concert Series, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Hospital Lobby Gallery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, 4301 W. Markham St., Little Rock.
Jacob Wunsch, cello, and Haeshin Shin, piano, will play Mendelssohn’s Cello Sonata No. 2 in D major, op.58. Magdalena Ryszkowski, violin, and Hee-Kyung Juhn, piano, will play Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in c minor, op. 45.

Allen, the former associate dean for academic affairs in the UAMS College of Health Professions, endowed the concert series before her death in 2023, aiming to “promote the beautiful music of the ASO” and to provide the opportunity “for celebration and renewal to hardworking UAMS students, staff and faculty,” according to a news release.
250th celebration
A Symphony of Northwest Arkansas string ensemble performs music by American composers celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in a concert titled “Declaration,” 7 p.m. Friday in the Great Hall at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, 600 Museum Way, Bentonville.
The program: “Danza De Panama” by William Grant Still; the third movement, “Fuge” from the Suite in E major by Arthur Foote; the second, “Somebody’s Knockin’ At Yo’ Do’,” and fourth, “Joshua Fit de Battle ob Jericho,” of the “Negro Folk Songs in Counterpoint” by Florence Price; “Lullaby” by George Gershwin; the second, “Rondino,” of Two Pieces for String Orchestra by Aaron Copland; “Folk Tune Air and Fiddler’s Fury” by Alexander Safford; “Interstellar Dreams” by Chris Pilsner and “Air and Simple Gifts” for String Orchestra by John Williams.
It’s part of the orchestra’s 2025-26 SoNA Beyond music series. Curator and conductor Jesse Collett, a member of the orchestra’s viola section, drew inspiration from “America 250,” currently on display in the museum’s galleries.

‘Fun & Color’
The South Arkansas Arts Center, 110 E. Fifth St., El Dorado, holds a reception at 5:30 p.m. Monday for Arkansas artist John Goodwin, whose work is on display through April 30 as part of an exhibition titled “Fun & Color: The Art of John Goodwin” in the center’s Merkle Gallery. Angelou adaptation
Metro Theater Company of St. Louis performs “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” a children’s play inspired by Maya Angelou’s 1993 poem of the same name, 2 p.m. Saturday at the Center for Humanities and Arts theater at the University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College, 3000 W. Scenic Drive, North Little Rock and 4 p.m. April 12 in the auditorium of Lafayette County High School, 1209 Alexander Lane, in Angelou’s hometown of Stamps.
The adaptation is by playwright, director, performer and choreographer Paige Hernandez. The Celebrate! Maya Project commissioned the performances as part of its annual salute to Angelou.
