The 79th N.C. Azalea Festival has featured long-standing traditions, large crowds and springtime pageantry across downtown Wilmington and nearby venues.
With tens of thousands of people attending the five-day festival, some of the highlights have included the queen’s coronation, the garden tour ribbon cutting, the parade and the street fair.
Here’s a look at some of the notable sights and moments from this year’s festival.
Parade
On Saturday, April 11, the parade, one of the festival’s biggest events, brought thousands of people to downtown. Streets were lined with floats, marching groups, performers and festival royalty, as spectators staked out viewing spots early.
Street Fair
Featuring food vendors, live entertainment and local retailers, the street fair kicked off Friday night, April 10. It also includes a children’s area and beer garden. The street fair continues through Sunday, April 12.
After Garden Party
The After Garden Get Down was held Friday, April 10 at Bluewater Waterfront Grill. The fun dockside party included live music, food, drinks and a visit from Queen Azalea Elaine Hendrix.
Garden Tour Ribbon Cutting
The 73rd annual Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour Ribbon Cutting was held Friday, April 10. This year’s self-guided tour features 12 gardens, including several “secret gardens” in the Autumn Hall neighborhood. It continues through Sunday, April 12.
Hospital Visit
On Thursday, April 9, Queen Azalea Elaine Hendrix and her court visited Novant Health’s Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Wilmington.
Celebrity Reception
The celebrity reception, which was held on Thursday, April 9, is a private function for partners and sponsors of the Azalea Festival. The event included invited guests, the queen’s court, cadets and the azalea queen.
Queen’s Coronation
The crowning marked an official start to the festival’s marquee events and celebrated the role of the Azalea Queen as a cultural ambassador during the multi-day celebration.
