Charli XCX took over every dance floor in 2024 with her superstar-making album Brat. That neon green mania, which had the world in a vice-grip for the last two years, is only just now fading. Now, she’s declared the dance floor dead.
In the latest British Vogue cover story, Charli divulged her plans to subvert her hyperpop discography by producing a rock album with two close collaborators, A. G. Cook and Finn Keane. On April 15th, she teased the album in an Instagram post on b.sides, her burner account (formerly 360.brat), featuring black-and-white photos of the three musicians. In the post, she shares that the trio “felt really inspired” during their time in Paris.
Details for the new album are still extremely limited. However, we know that Charli is scaling back her signature use of Auto-Tune. A selection of lyrics featured in the recent profile hints that the album reflects on her relationship with making art. Cook—another hyperpop pioneer who has produced some of Charli’s most beloved tracks—picked up the guitar to record this latest album. The trio is still working on the yet-to-be-named album.
This latest announcement is the latest in a string of reinventions for the British musician—right now, she is in her actor era. She made her debut as a star and a producer in the semi-autobiographical, star-studded mockumentary The Moment. In the film, Charli pokes fun at her rise to superstardom after nearly a decade of working tirelessly right under the mainstream radar. So it feels fitting that she feels inspired to once again “flip the form,” as she said in the recent interview, as she reckons with her newfound fame.
This month alone, she is appearing in two films: Erupcja, Pete Oh’s romantic drama centered around a volcanic eruption, and Faces of Death, a remake of the 1978 horror film. Later this year, she will also feature in Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex and Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, alongside Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega.
Even Charli’s latest music project was tied to a movie. She released a companion soundtrack for Emerald Fennel’s Wuthering Heights in February 2026. The album was produced by Keane and featured guest verses from Sky Ferreira and John Cale.
Charli’s announcement about stepping off the dance floor comes just one day after Madonna revealed she will jump back into the club scene. At least one diva will be keeping us on the dance floor in 2026.
