Michelle Williams is supporting her husband, Thomas Kail, at the opening night of Proof.
The actress, 45, walked the red carpet at the Booth Theatre alongside Kail on April 16 ahead of the Broadway revival of Proof, the play about grief, legacy and brilliance that first debuted in 2000. Kail, the Tony Award-winning director of Hamilton, also directs Proof, which stars Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle in leading roles.
Williams, donning a long red tunic, black pants and heels, posed alongside Kail, who wore a simple black suit and black tie for the opening night of the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play. The couple has been married since 2020, and they share three children, including son Hart Kail; Kail is also stepfather to Williams’ daughter Matilda Ledger, whom she welcomed with late actor Heath Ledger.
In Proof, Catherine (Edebiri), the brilliant but restless daughter of renowned mathematics professor Robert (Cheadle), is thrust into turmoil after her father’s death when a notebook containing a groundbreaking mathematical proof is discovered. As questions swirl about who truly authored the work, Catherine must confront the complicated legacy left behind — and prove herself in the process.

In addition to Edebiri and Cheadle, Jin Ha and Kara Young — who, just weeks ago, took over the role from Samira Wiley in the wake of a health issue — complete the cast. Proof, which began performances on March 31, was written by playwright David Auburn and features original music by Kris Bowers.
Kail serves as a producer for the Broadway revival, alongside Tony Award-nominated producer Mike Bosner. The play is co-produced by Higher Ground, the media company founded by former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.
“To bring this landmark play back to Broadway with Ayo, Don, Tommy and Mike at the helm is an extraordinary privilege, and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this production. Proof is exactly the kind of story Higher Ground was built to champion,” Barack and Michelle Obama previously said in a statement. “A play that asks profound questions about brilliance, doubt and what we inherit from the people we love most.”
A number of famous faces stepped out to support the play on opening night, including Matt Damon, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anna Wintour, Nicholas Braun, Leslie Bibb and Aimee Lou Wood.
