music is to blame.: Your New Guitar Hero? Maebe Release ‘God Wit’

Five-piece math-rock band Maebe have released their latest venture into the world of prog-rock with their explosive single ‘God Wit’, the latest in the run-up to the release of their third album. The track is a symbolic reflection of the band as a whole, expansive and exploratory in nature, with their upcoming album ‘Brain Paint’ being the next step into the unknown compared to their earlier efforts, with everything preceding this album having been a solo project from guitarist Michael Astley Brown.

The track itself starts as the band means to go on, it’s alive and kicking with a really refreshing urgency – there’s no hanging around here, making it a perfect album opener. The weaving of melodies in and around squealing guitar harmonics and the vigorous bassline gives ‘God Wit’, an instrumental song, a core energy to bounce off of. There’s an undeniable charm to this tune, helped by the outlandish drum fills and unsuspected dynamic changes Maebe have given us a blazing tune – something we hope to hear more of.

As the song breaks down, a gentler side of the band comes to the fore, oozing with the playful, melodic approach of guitar icons like Joe Satriani. The track’s tension here toys with us; you’re on your feet waiting for the full band to kick in but these Bristol boys are more than comfortable floating through this dreamy suspension. The return of the dancing trio of guitars is appreciated, ending the song with a fiery interplay between every band member.

‘God Wit’ stands confident with its sensational clarity, not just in the song’s continued propulsion, but in the mastery with which each band member cuts through the mix to bring their own personal inflection. The delicate ride bell adding colour to an overwhelming wall of overdriven guitars displays supreme musicianship for a band still in their infancy. The seemingly effortless translation of individual proficiency into a top-level collective band is brewing excitement among their fans hoping to catch them on their upcoming UK tour. There is, of course, more to come from Maebe, with their album ‘Brain Paint’ being released to the world on the 24th of May. If there’s any more of the mind-numbingly superb work we’ve heard from their latest single this upcoming album will be one to watch!
