Gympie indie-folk singer-songwriter Elke Louie is preparing to release her debut EP ‘Lavender’. . . And the missing piece, a love song (and accompanying music video) is here.
The engaging, five-track EP includes the dreamy new track, ‘Lavender’, as well as earlier releases ‘Sandman’ and ‘Killing Time’.
On new track ‘Lavender’, Elke’s voice is as smooth as butter as she describes the love she has for her partner, and best friend, Liz Wilkinson.
“I’d already recorded the first four songs over several months after my 18th birthday. I realised I hadn’t yet written a love song, which felt kind of wild considering where I was at in life (I’ve been songwriting since about 13),” Elke says. “I was invited to spend time away at a writing retreat with my mum, it was a pretty dreamy location, completely removed from any stress or distraction. Missing my partner and first love, It gave me the space to really sit in those feelings of gratitude.”

The self-directed video is washed in warmth and nature, with beautiful shots of Elke and her partner balancing on a rooftop and wandering the outdoors together. There’s a bridge surrounded by trees, a flowing creek, plants in glass jars. . . And a galaxy of stars. It sets the scene for a gorgeous love story, and the track acts as the final puzzle piece of Elke’s ‘Lavender’ EP. The video, like the song, feels like a warm embrace.

“The EP as a whole is definitely a sonic time capsule, the film clip for ‘Lavender’, the title track, presents the best visuals possible in my perspective to complement this, my first love song. I think it’ll be something really special for us to look back on as we grow up. Even more special as my partner pretty much created it, we enjoyed shooting it together with our close friends helping out.”
And the locations aren’t just places that happened to look beautiful on screen, either.
“It’s centred around my partner and the places that mean something to us – locations tied to memories we’ve already made together,” Elke describes.
Like most creative projects, shooting the music video for ‘Lavender’ didn’t go off without a hitch. Shooting in nature means having faith in the conditions – and Elke and her partner weren’t exactly lucky. . . But they made it work.
“We had some bad luck with the weather on the first two scheduled shoot days, pouring rain we hadn’t accounted for as amateur filmmakers,” Elke admits.
“The deadline was getting closer and the weather wasn’t great still, but we learnt the value in shooting all day in overcast conditions, and the failed rainy shoot days meant we had planned the shoot list better so it happened quickly.”
“Also, the moment Liz looks a bit wobbly on the roof wasn’t fake! Actual risky teen antics.”
