The Cage
BBC One, 9pm
The incredibly versatile Sheridan Smith has delivered a number of unforgettable performances, both on screen and stage, in recent years. But there is talk that The Cage could well be her most entertaining small screen series yet.
In the Liverpool-set crime drama, which she describes as “like one giant poker game”, the actor plays Leanne, who discovers that she and her colleague Matty (This Is England and Summer’s Michael Socha) are both stealing from the safe at the casino for which they work. And it isn’t long before their lives are set on a collision course – with each other, the local gangster and the police.
The series also stars Barry Sloane, Geraldine James, Anton Bibby and Freya Jones and was written by Bafta-nominated Tony Schumacher, the man behind the hit BBC series The Responder.
He is hoping viewers will find it “funny, dark, but most of all full of love, life and entertainment.”
If they do, The Cage may indeed prove to be another high point in Smith’s already stellar career.
