(NEXSTAR) – A technician working to assemble a stage structure for a Shakira performance in Rio de Janeiro suffered a fatal injury when a portion of his body was crushed on Sunday, officials and event organizers say.
A message posted to the official Instagram account of Todo Mundo No Rio, the free concert series that Shakira is scheduled to headline on May 2, confirmed the worker’s death late on Sunday.
“The event organizers confirm that an accident this Sunday afternoon (April 26) tragically claimed the life of a worker who was assembling the structures for the show,” reads a translation of the post. “First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the injured person. Unfortunately, the worker passed away at the hospital.”
A spokesperson for the Military Firefighters Corps in Rio de Janeiro (Corpo de Bombeiros do Rio de Janeiro) said the incident involved a lifting system, and that the worker’s legs had been crushed, according to a statement obtained by the Agence France-Presse.
Concert organizers said they were “offering our full support” to the technical teams and the victim’s family in the wake of the accident.
Todos Mundo No Rio, now in its third year, is scheduled to take place at the Copacabana beach in Rio on May 2. Shakira had been confirmed as the headliner of this year’s event in February. Past headliners Madonna, in 2024, and Lady Gaga, in 2025, had drawn record audiences, with Gaga’s reportedly attended by somewhere between 2.1 million and 2.5 million people, according to tallies touted by local organizers and Lady Gaga’s representatives.
