Yannick Bisson’s 19th season of Murdoch Mysteries is just as exciting as his first.

The actor, 56, plays William Murdoch in the Canadian television series Murdoch Mysteries. The show has featured a slew of guest stars over the years, and this season is no exception, with cameos from Property Brothers‘ Drew Scott and Real Housewives of New York City‘s Luann de Lesseps.

The series, which airs on Acorn TV, is based in Toronto at the end of the 19th century and has maintained its popularity since it first aired in 2008. Bisson says he thinks the show has managed to stay relevant despite its century-old setting because of quality screenwriting and an effort to “take the temperature” of what’s going on in the world.

“[We have] some touchstones in terms of tones we always fall back on that seem to resonate with people,” he tells PEOPLE. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously. So, we’re able to throw in a good laugh every once in a while, and recenter ourselves back to zero.”

Bisson says he’s excited for Season 19 to air, as his character William Murdoch faces a host of interesting new challenges and puzzles.

“We have some archrivals that return. [Murdoch] having to not get emotional, stick to his job, do everything by the book, and not become vengeful is the thing, and he’s got to really outsmart the bad guys,” he says. “That’s the part I appreciate about him: No matter how far he gets pushed, he still retains composure … and he’ll use his brain.”

As a young detective who uses technology to solve crimes, William has evolved over the seasons, Bisson says, to allow viewers to relate to him. He began the series as “hemmed in and buttoned down,” but Bisson says the writers have worked to bring out the humanity in the detective.

“We all have to evolve,” he explains. “Over time he learned to empathize with people and their struggles that were not from the same walk of life as him. If he stayed stagnant and didn’t understand and appreciate and empathize, it wouldn’t be somebody that would be worth spending time with.”

So as for the new people he’s been spending time with this season? Bisson, who is friends with both of the Property Brothers (Drew and his brother Jonathan Scott), says he enjoyed working with the reality star on set, and also praises Lesseps for her sense of humor, saying she’s a “hoot.”

Murdoch Mysteries is just one of Acorn TV’s cozy whodunits airing in Murder Mystery May, a month-long celebration of crime dramas which will feature a new series premiering every week, a mystery every Monday and a film every Friday. This year, the programming will be headlined by the new crime series You’re Killing Me, starring and executive produced by Brooke Shields.

In addition to a new season of Murdoch Mysteries, Acorn TV will also release the Scottish thriller Summerwater starring Dougray Scott and Valene Kane, Northern Ireland crime drama Dead & Buried starring Annabel Scholey and Colin Morgan and Gaelic mystery The Island.

Thinking ahead to next season, which celebrity would Bisson like to see cameo on the show? None other than Drake himself. The rapper’s strong ties to Toronto would make him the perfect fit for the series, he says.

“He’s a hard worker. And he’s fiercely loyal to his friends, his close friends and family,” Bisson says. “There must be a way. We’ll have to figure something out. Champagne Papi, if you’re listening, come on down.”
