Meghan Markle has been estranged from her father Thomas Markle for seven years, even though the two are believed to have communicated late last year after a severe medical emergency.
The Duchess of Sussex is understood to have sent a handwritten note to her father during his hospital stay in the Philippines, where he underwent a critical leg amputation procedure. The former Hollywood lighting director has now returned to the United States for ongoing medical care, fueling suggestions that a potential reconciliation with his daughter might still occur.
Prior to the relationship deteriorating before Meghan’s marriage to King Charles’ youngest son, it was reported that Harry had never met his father-in-law.
Based on Vickers’ analysis, apprehension about what Thomas might reveal could have contributed to the gap between them.
“I raise it as a possibility,” he told GB News. “I think more likely she was nervous that he might say something to Prince Harry.”
He further observed that Thomas had shared a close bond with Meghan throughout her childhood, noting that the circumstances seemed distressing for him, considering their estrangement. He noted that Thomas had been a supportive and caring figure in Meghan’s life during her formative years, reports the Express.
“If you listen to what he says as opposed to how his words are reported, you will find a decent man who must feel extremely let down,” he said. “It was in fact a member of Prince Harry’s family who suggested that she might have been nervous of what he might say.”
He suggested it was possible that Meghan still doesn’t want Harry and her father to meet, which is why she has also shunned plans to reunite with Thomas Markle.
Thomas Markle fell ill in December 2025 after he suffered a devastating blood clot in his thigh that rapidly cut off circulation to his lower limb.
His foot reportedly turned blue and then black, prompting an emergency rush to a hospital. The operation took place in Cebu, Philippines, where he had relocated earlier that year, with his son Thomas Jr. staying in the country to support his dad.
The surgery was said to have taken three hours, with Thomas Sr. currently waiting to be fitted with a prosthetic leg.
At the time, Meghan Markle‘s spokesperson confirmed the Duchess of Sussex had reached out to her father via a letter. This came after initial private communication attempts via phone and email were complicated by intense media presence at the hospital.
