‘Obsession’ ending explained: The shocking twist, who dies and whether a sequel is coming

The phrase “be careful what you wish for” has never been truer than in the new horror film Obsession, which has an ending so dark and twisted, you may find yourself avoiding wishing on birthday candles and shooting stars for the foreseeable future.

Too afraid to watch the movie? Allow us to explain. (Warning: spoilers ahead.)

Out May 15 nationwide, the new movie from YouTuber and Milk & Serial filmmaker Curry Barker follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a lonely 20-something with an unreciprocated crush on his childhood friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Bear’s too nervous to properly ask her out, mostly because he senses she’s not exactly into him as more than a friend. So, when he drops her off at her house following a night out with friends, he’s desperate enough to make a wish on a “One-Wish Willow” — a gag gift he originally picked out for Nikki at an occult shop. Snapping the branch inside the box (which is how one makes the wish), Bear wishes that Nikki would love him “more than anyone in the entire world.”

The wish immediately comes true. Nikki becomes obsessed with Bear — and desperate for him to love her back. At first, Bear plays along, happy that Nikki’s finally reciprocating his feelings, even as his friends Ian (Cooper Tomlinson, Barker’s longtime collaborator) and Sarah (Megan Lawless) are weirded out by Nikki’s sudden shift.

Alas, Bear quickly learns that forcing someone to love you by magical means will never, ever go well.

When obsession isn’t exactly love

It soon becomes clear that Nikki’s not exactly behaving like herself — nor, well, any normal person. She stands at the door waiting for Bear for hours, soiling herself in the process. (It’s not exactly a romantic comedy, guys.) When Bear says he’s interested in becoming a food critic, she makes him a sandwich to taste test…out of meat from his dead cat. And that’s in addition to all of the screaming, crying and terrifying tantrum-throwing when Bear dares to leave her side.

It eventually comes out that whoever this obsessive person is, it’s not Nikki at all — rather, it’s some sort of entity, created by the wish, that is possessing her. In the middle of the night, Nikki whispers to Bear that the other version of her is asleep and begs Bear to kill her to put her out of her misery.

Bear attempts to call the One-Wish Willow company and reverse the wish, which an operator tells him is impossible … unless, you know, Bear dies. So Bear feels very stuck in this codependent relationship.

What happens to Nikki and Bear at the end of ‘Obsession’

So what happens in the end? Nothing good.

After Nikki’s behavior escalates to dangerous levels (she violently murders Sarah after seeing Bear and Sarah in a car together), Bear becomes hellbent on getting out of this tragic situation. He purchases more One-Wish Willows, but is unable to break any of them — turns out, they were really serious about the whole “one wish” thing. When Bear begs Ian to make a wish that will reverse Nikki’s violent, undying love for him, Ian instead wishes for a billion dollars … which, proving the One-Wish Willow real, immediately rains down on them.

But Nikki won’t let anything stand in the way of her relationship with Bear, so…she kills Ian. Bear, desperate, runs and hides from Nikki in the bathroom, and makes a plan to die by suicide in order to get out of a situation that left pretty much all of his friends dead. He swallows a handful of his grandmother’s pills, ready to die to save Nikki and get out of this horrible relationship. Except, it’s too late: In the other room, Nikki breaks a One-Wish Willow (which we know because we hear the familiar jingle that plays when a One-Wish Willow is snapped) and, seemingly, wishes for Bear to be just as obsessed with her as she is with him.

Bear, now lovestruck, comes into the living room and embraces Nikki. The two sit on the couch, finally mutually obsessed with each other. Alas, it doesn’t last: The pills kick in, and Bear dies in Nikki’s arms. And when he’s finally dead … that spell Bear unknowingly placed on Nikki is broken, and Nikki is finally free. Unfortunately, she’ll also have to live with the very real consequences of her behavior while possessed.

Will there be a sequel?

Barker previously told Variety that Obsession was inspired by an episode of The Simpsons in which Homer makes a wish gone awry. He channeled that concept in order to come up with a story about the dark side of obsessive love and codependency.

As to whether there will be a sequel to Obsession, Barker told Variety that there likely won’t be a continuation of Nikki’s story.

“I don’t think you’ll ever see a movie with these characters again,” he said, “but it would be cool to expand this world with different characters.”
