Key Points

  • Michael retook the top spot at the box office this weekend with a $26 million domestic take and $83.8 million globally.

  • In its fourth week of release, the jukebox musical biopic of Michael Jackson beat out The Devil Wears Prada 2 in week 3 and new horror release Obsession in its premiere.

  • The King of Pop faces serious competition from Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu at next weekend’s box office battle.

The comebacks keep coming.

A month into its release, Antoine Fuqua’s jukebox biopic Michael proved that negative critical opinion and a good deal of pre-release controversy are no match for the King of Pop — or for his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who plays Michael Jackson in the film.

Michael earned $26 million domestically in its fourth week in theaters, and $83.8 million globally, earning it the top spot on both box office charts, per Comscore. The film premiered at No. 1 in mid-March before being overtaken in the following weeks by The Devil Wears Prada 2. But the fashion-forward sequel shed nearly 400 screens in its third week of release, ceding both box office lists to Michael, which is proving to have some of the most loyal fans of the year thus far.

Diving deeper into the numbers proves that Michael‘s success is no fluke.

After four weeks, the film is still showing strong in 3,560 theaters, and registered a $7,388 per-theater-average this weekend. The Devil Wears Prada 2, meanwhile, earned $4,700 per theater in the same time frame, while on 3,830 theaters and after only three weeks. The buzzy reunion for Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt $18 million domestically this weekend, and $68.6 million globally.

The debut film from rising horror star Curry Barker, Focus Features’ supernatural chiller Obsession, snagged the No. 3 spot domestically. It earned $16 million in its premiere at home and $23 million around the world, placing it at No. 6 on the global leaderboard. Dear You took that chart’s bronze — an indie drama from China that earned $39 million from its second week in theaters.

At $703.8 million worldwide, Michael is now the second highest-earning film at the 2026 global box office. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie still has a roughly $200 million lead on the musical biopic, but given the latter film’s legs, that gap could close in coming weeks.

Domestically, the film is two spots away from the gold, with Project Hail Mary besting Michael‘s $282.7 million gross with its $334.8 million gross.

After a month of moonwalking and catwalking, a coming contender finally poses a credible threat with starwalking.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters next weekend, bringing the full, combined forces Disney, Lucasfilm, and the Star Wars franchise to bear on the box office.

At April’s CinemaCon convention, director Jon Favreau premiered the film’s opening minutes for the excited crowd. Fans can look forward to seeing the lovable Grogu use the Force and Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin use laser blasts, flamethrowers, and his fists to mow down stormtroopers in an epic fight scene in the first big-screen treatment of the beloved characters from Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
