Prince William wasn’t happy when his brother spoke out against the royal family, according to a former royal butler.
Prince Harry left the royal family in 2019 after marrying Meghan Markle, with the couple moving to America and later speaking out on their experiences. The Duke of Sussex repeatedly criticized his brother in his memoir, Spare, as well as step-mom Queen Elizabeth and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.
During the Oprah interview, Harry said he felt “really let down” by his father King Charles, who stopped taking his calls when he left the royal family. The pair have since started to slowly mend their relationship.
Harry also suggested a “lack of support and a lack of understanding” is what forced him and Meghan to step down as senior working royals, before admitting he believed his brother and father were “trapped” in the royal family.
Former royal butler Grant Harrold has now spoken exclusively to The Express US to reveal what William might have been feeling when he heard his brother’s comments to Oprah.
Speaking on behalf of OLBG, he shared, “The reality is that we know the royal family is a firm, it is a system, things are done in a very specific way. Their schedules and diaries are planned months in advance, each day is very regulated by engagements and appointments. It is without question a system more than a family at times.
“The reality today is that you can walk away from it, as Harry and Meghan have shown. When previously Harry said that he felt trapped, I guess that may have irritated William.”
The expert pointed out how the Prince of Wales is “in a different position to his brother as the heir to the throne.” He added, “If William did what Harry did it would have been a massive constitutional crisis.”
Harrold also suggested William feels very differently to his brother when it comes to the royal family.
He explained, “William will also has very fond memories of growing up within the royal family. When I worked with the family in their late teens and early twenties, it was a world William and Harry were both very happy to be in and given as normal a life as possible.
“So to hear Harry say that may have damaged some lovely memories for William.”
