After three weekends at the box office, The Mandalorian and Grogu has so far amassed a total of $293,585,022, with $155,785,022 arriving at the domestic box office – still $100m behind the lowest grossing film of the Disney era Solo: A Star Wars Story – and a long haul from the other four modern movies, all of which delivered north of $1bn globally. Dropping to number six in the US chart after 3 weeks, the film is now on 3,355 screens, down −945 from last week and 59% down on last weeks figure, which in turn was 70% down on its opening weekend.
Despite a slightly better-than-expected opening weekend, the flick saw a huge 70% decline in its second weekend, leaving Star Wars fans feeling very deflated. Low-budget horror movies Obsession and Backrooms are now catching up to its current box office total of $294 million despite opening lower. Naturally, the futures of Din Djarin and Grogu – as well as that of the Star Wars franchise itself – are unclear. Or, well, at least it seems that way.
Speaking at Fan Expo Philadelphia last weekend star Brendan Wayne seems optimistic that the characters will return, despite the box office being at the lower end of expectations.
“We also know, or maybe only I do, that there is definitely a place in the world for more of us…I think the audiences have given us the permission to proceed. I don’t know if it’s going to be on the small screen or the big screen, my guess is the big screen, but I’m looking forward to it.”
Remember, Star Wars films are unique – with merchandise, licensing fees, the parks and its forever home on Disney Plus to factor in, the film should more than cover its nose when all the bean counting is done, something we discuss (along with plenty of others topics) on the 259th episode of Making Tracks, which lands on Fantha Tracks Radio tomorrow night at 7.00pm UK time.
