A resurfaced report by a palace source has revealed the reason Prince William is never seen out in public with his wedding ring on.
An estimated two billion people tuned in to watch the Prince of Wales wed Catherine Middleton in April 2011, with the pair exchanging vows at London’s Westminster Abbey.
However, the 43-year-old has never been seen wearing his wedding band on his left hand, despite his wife hardly ever making an appearance without her own engagement ring, which belonged to the late Princess Diana.
Now, a resurfaced interview with a palace source has revealed the truth behind William’s decision to forego his wedding ring over the years.
“He’s not one for jewellery. He’s never worn any,” an insider told The Mirror in the lead-up to William’s 2011 nuptials.
“He decided he didn’t want to wear one now. It’s all down to personal preference.”
William isn’t the only royal who decided against wearing a wedding ring, with his grandfather Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, also foregoing a wedding band when he was consort.
A royal commentator reflected on the unorthodox act, informing Marie Claire in 2018 that the men in the royal family have “never” been forced to adhere to the ring-wearing custom.
“Although it’s traditional for royal women to wear both an engagement ring and a wedding ring after they get married, it’s never been traditional for royal men to wear one,” Eloise Parker told the publication.
“That’s why Prince Philip and Prince William don’t wear them,” she said, adding: “I think when you have a wedding watched by millions, everyone knows you’re married.”
While the future King has decided to go ringless, his wife Princess Kate is seen more often than not wearing an impressive stack on her ring finger.
Her engagement ring is one of the most iconic pieces of jewellery of all time, featuring a 12-karat oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds and set in 18-karat white gold.
When William proposed to Kate in November 2010 with his mother Princess Diana’s engagement ring, he said it was his “way of keeping her sort of close to it all.”
The unmistakable sparkler is accompanied by Kate’s traditional Welsh gold wedding band and two elegant eternity rings.
The Welsh gold band was crafted by royal jewellers Wartski and made from the same nugget of gold used for the late Queen Elizabeth’s own ring.
The first of the eternity bands is widely believed to be an Annoushka Eclipse diamond ring given to the princess by her husband after the birth of their first son Prince George in 2013.
The second of the two is a sapphire-and-diamond Étincelle de Cartier band, which the royal was first seen wearing in a 2024 video where she updated fans on her health.
It is understood that William gifted the ring to Kate around the same time she completed chemotherapy.
