Genius Names New CRO, Joel Flatow Departs RIAA to Launch Own Company

Genius has promoted Jackie Vignone to chief revenue officer, the company announced. She joined the company eight years ago, assisting with their investments in data licensing, lyric sublicensing and consumer products.

Within her new role, Vignone will oversee a growth strategy that aims to convert Genius’ proprietary music data, audience reach and cultural currency into revenue opportunities.

“Jackie has been instrumental in innovating Genius’ commercial business to reinforce the company’s value in an increasingly competitive market,” Michael Heyward, CEO MediaLab, which is the parent company of Genius, said in a statement. “Under her leadership and collaboration, Genius will evolve beyond its core business into exciting new areas that level up the company’s B2B and B2C offerings and create more reasons for partners to choose Genius.”

Vignone has also appointed Sara Kern as vp of marketing and creative strategy, Gabe Silverman as music partnerships and development lead and Devon Chaiken as vp, head of sales. Kern joins from Paramount and had helped with leading the company’s global rebrand and launch of Paramount+. Silverman previously served at Amazon Music and Meta. Chaiken oversaw the West Coast sales team at Genius and will now lead national revenue strategy for Genius’ brand partnerships division.

“Genius has built one of the most engaged audiences in music and one of the richest ecosystems of lyrics, cultural insights and music intelligence anywhere in the industry,” Vignone said in a statement. “We’re deepening that foundation into new licensing, data and partnership opportunities while building products that help artists, brands and music companies better understand and connect with their highest-value audiences.”

Joel Flatow announced he is stepping down from his role as senior vp of artist and industry relations and chief of west coast operations at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to launch Flatow Strategies, LLC.

“Joel’s contributions to RIAA and the music community are extraordinary,” RIAA chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier said in a statement. “For more than three decades, he has helped bring people together, often in moments when trust, judgement and relationships made all the difference. Joel was a cornerstone of our artist relations work, having opened and established our West Coast presence, strengthened coalitions across the creative community and helped ensure that artists and music had a meaningful voice in consequential policy debates. He has been a colleague, counselor and friend to so many of us. I know his next chapter will reflect the same generosity, creativity and deep commitment that have already defined his career.”

Flatow Strategies will help organizations, leaders and coalitions with policy, culture, technology and public impact. The company will continue to represent and advocate for RIAA and its members, and additional clients include The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA, The Creative Coalition, The Schramm Group, Center of Gravity Productions and Whitenoise Music Group.

“RIAA has been my professional home for so many years through such seismic change in the industry, and I am profoundly grateful to everyone who has shaped that experience,” Flatow said in a statement. “My work has aways been about building trust and understanding and finding a way forward to support artists and their teams. Flatow Strategies will carry that work forward with organizations and leaders facing moments where policy, culture and technology are rapidly evolving.”

Prior to joining RIAA in 1995, Flatow served as legislative director of the congressional arts caucus.

Marianne brings experience, calmness and professionalism to everything she does and is trusted across every part of the business. This promotion is richly deserved. She also makes the best New York cheesecake ever.”

Frederick said, “I’m incredibly proud to take on this new role and continue working across Chrysalis Records and Blue Raincoat Management. Over the last 10 years I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with brilliant teams across so many areas of the business, supporting artists and releases at every stage of the process. Physical music remains a hugely important part of artist campaigns and fan culture, and I’m excited to continue building and evolving our manufacturing and distribution operations as the company grows.”

Kiley has built something special at Greenhouse, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow alongside her and the team.”

Kiley Donahoe, founder of Greenhouse Management, said in a statement, “Matt has been an integral part of my team for several years working with ERNEST.
