We were this close of getting Queen of Pop Madonna‘s biopic, until it got shelved due to a “falling out.”
The 67-year-old “Material Girl” singer recently opened up about why her passion project fell apart even though she worked on it for two years.
Speaking to Interview Magazine’s Mel Ottenberg, Madonna shared that before she planned her upcoming album, “Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II,” she was on the verge of making a “movie” on her life.

However, a disagreement between the seven time Grammy winner and the Universal Studios brought the project to a halt.
“I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting,” Madonna shared. “We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget because I needed—I’ve had an extraordinary life.”

Emphasizing the need for the grand scale her biopic requires, she continued, “I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget.”
After insinuating that she could not lower the expanse of her film, the songstress shared she “found a way to make it for less money in Serbia,” however, the idea was not appreciated by the studio.
“Maybe they just didn’t believe in me,” Madonna continued. “One of their first reactions was, ‘We don’t believe you’d stay in Serbia more than four days.’ And I said, ‘Did you read the script?’ My whole life has been survival. I’m not going there for a holiday.”
She shared that she “was in limbo when that fell apart.” That incident was followed by another approach from Netflix who suggested she made a series with her story. However, that also could not materialize because even though the “Frozen” hitmaker wrote the script, the rights belonged to Universal. In order to obtain it, Madonna said she would have to pay an “extortionist’s price.”
Before the project fell apart after getting announced in 2020, Julia Garner was set to portray the singer on screen.
While it may be a long wait before Madonna’s biopic could see the light of day, fans will not have to wait long to enjoy one of her new creations.
Madonna is all set to release her fifteenth studio album, “Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II” on July 3, which will serve as a sequel to her 2005 album “Confessions on a Dance Floor.” The upcoming project will be Madonna’s first album in seven years, with her last, “Madame X” releasing in 2019.
