In a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment, actress Angelina Jolie made rare comments about her relationship with her children this week. Jolie has six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne, from her former relationship with her ex-husband, Brad Pitt.
The star is currently promoting her new film Couture, in which she plays filmmaker Maxine Walker as she discovers she has breast cancer. During her discussion with the online publication, she was asked about how her perspective has changed since she was younger.
“Oh, completely,” she said. “Completely and maybe I’ve come around to being a little bit more the person I used to be.”
She continued, “I’m discovering something now that my daughters are older. They’re talking to me as young women, and I’m seeing what I want for them. I’m seeing what I don’t want them to lose and what I want them to hold on to. And it’s kind of reminding me what I may have lost.
Jolie added that she hopes her daughters continue in life with their strength and openness and softness and faith and ferocity.”
“I think in some way they’re bringing me back to my old self,” she added. “My desire for them to have all of the strength and openness and softness and faith and ferocity is reminding me.”
And their relationship to her has changed as well.
I think they kind of want me now to not just be ‘Mom,’” shared Jolie. “There’s a different room for me to be that woman again, that’s not just a mom.
In the interview, Jolie also shared a very rare comment on her romantic life since her divorce from Pitt in 2016.
“To be candid, I haven’t dated since I divorced a decade ago,” she shared. “So I kind of get in my head that that aspect of me is not centered in my life if I’m focusing on my children, my family…So yes, things are changing, but in a way I didn’t expect. I’m thinking I have to live again. Be free again.
