As part of the huge cuts across Xbox that began yesterday, Avowed and Outer Worlds 2 developer Obsidian Entertainment has been hit pretty hard, with around 25% of staff cut from the Xbox Studio.
That’s according to a report from Rebekah Valentine over at Kotaku, who shared that her sources advised around 60-70 members of the Obsidian development team were cut, including senior level positions with over twenty years of tenure at the studio.
Linkedin is littered with posts from members of the Obsidian Entertainment team who are now looking for work from a variety of disciplines. Daniel Alpert, Obsidian’s Art Director and veteran of the studio for 21 years of service, was a part of the cuts.
Writing on Linkedin, he thanked his team for an ‘incredible 21 years’ and expressed sadness at what had happened, saying –

While this wasn’t the outcome I hoped for, I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful for the time I spent there. Obsidian wasn’t just a workplace, it was where I built a career, formed lasting friendships, and had the opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented and passionate people in the industry.
We are clearly at a turning point in the games industry. These past months have been difficult for so many talented people, and unfortunately, it seems the challenges aren’t over yet.
