It’s the most wonderful time of the year… well, almost! Christmas in July programming is back, so you can enjoy the themes of the holiday season without worrying about who you haven’t purchased a present for yet.
And one of this month’s merry installments, as a part of Great American Christmas in July on GAF, is The Trouble With Mistletoe, starring Jillian Murray (who recently joined When Hope Calls) and County Rescue‘s Brett Varvel. “It’s like an appetizer for Christmas,” says Murray of the popularity behind Christmas in July programming. “It gets you excited about what’s coming up. And I think there is something about the preparation [being] just as exciting as the actual event.”
In Mistletoe, Murray plays New York City acquisitions exec Victoria, who returns to her small New Jersey hometown on a mission. She must convince the recent buyer of the town’s community center to sell the building to her company so they can renovate it into a fancy new space. The problem? The owner is Victoria’s ex-fiancé Luke (Varvel) — and he is not interested in losing his latest passion project to a big corp. “The conflict is immediate,” teases Murray, who liked that the story wasn’t driven by insta-love. “Her goal is to get these papers signed, and usually the goal is to get the guy.”
Initially, their meeting is downright frosty. “He knows her inside and out,” Murray says. “When I was reading [the script], I was thinking that he’s the only one that seems to get under her skin. He’s the only person that she can’t be alpha with.”

But eventually, their hearts will melt — and they even had some real-life Yuletide magic to help during shooting in New York. “There’s a scene where [Victoria is] walking down the street and it actually started snowing,” Murray, who was hiding a six-month baby bump during filming, tells us. “That’s so rare for Christmas movies, we usually shoot in such weird seasons and weird times. And literally, as we started rolling, little snowflakes started coming down. So that was super unique.” Snow way.
