Julie Chen Moonves wants to wear a mullet wig and shoulder pads on “Big Brother”

We’ve already seen Big Brother contestants travel back to the totally rad 1980s and the dinosaur-filled caveman era as part of season 28’s Time Trip theme.

Instead of using a primitive Time Laser, players were transported to the past via a “Dining Table Time Machine,” which, not for nothing, seems like a somewhat irresponsible place to put a time machine. What happens if you’re just trying to eat your daily dose of slop and mistakenly engage the time travel mechanism and end up in the year 2000 being forced to compose lyrics for a long-forgotten original Big Brother theme song? But we digress….

Clearly, time travel will be a big part of the current Big Brother season. Why, even host Julie Chen Moonves got into the action when she time-travelled back to Dec. 20, 2023 to secure the reality competition services of Dee Valladares after original contestant Rachel Reilly was boiled to death in a prehistoric volcano.

Unfortunately, we never saw the Chenbot during her time-travel adventure, but is that something we will see at some point during the season? And, if so, will she look the part — say, being forced to dress in mammoth fur like the rest of the cast was during their trip back to 175 million BC?

Even if the host is unable to be part of the time-traveling shenanigans due to her being positioned too far away from the Dining Table Time Machine (which seems to be some long-lost cousin of the Hot Tub Time Machine), couldn’t she still get in the spirit of things and dress the part for whichever era contestants are traveling to? After all, Chen Moonves has become something of a fashion icon on the Big Brother stage, so throwing in some looks from different eras could be fun for both her and viewers.

So we asked the master of ceremonies if we might be seeing some retro-ensembles from different eras this season, while also professing our desire to see her lean into the time-travel theme.

“I totally agree!” Chen Moonves tells Entertainment Weekly. “I have floated it up the chain of command.”

It seems the host not only has professed a desire to be theme-compliant, but has pushed for an answer sooner rather than later.

“I said, ‘If you want me to wear a mullet wig, you have to let me know as soon as possible, because I have to put in the order.’ Because I want it to look good. I want it to be funny, but I want it to look good!”

And she is not stopping at a mere mullet. “I do love shoulder pads. I mean, the ’80s!”

The 56-year-old host has a particular affinity for the decade. “I mean, personally, I am a child of the ’80s. That’s when I started being allowed to wear makeup. So part of me wants big hair, maybe some red Sally Jessy Raphael glasses, shoulder pads, lots of lip gloss — you know, just ’80s it out!”

Chen Moonves says she is all in on the idea, even if her executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan may not be.

“I think I should do something like that,” she says. “I don’t know if Allison and Rich and the network will agree, but I’ve suggested things.”

And she’s happy to get into the act, even if it is not for the main show.

“Even if it’s just for silly social media,” she suggests, knowing a little something about that after trying out BB Blockbuster competitions on her Instagram account. “But I love that. I think it’s so fun. You gotta laugh at yourself.”

When you host a show in which reality television legends are murdered by velociraptors, that seems to be requirement number one.
