The King and Queen watched the match from a heavily secured VIP suite with Donald and Melania Trump, while the heir to the throne and her sister sat in a nearby section. After the final whistle, the Spanish royal family privately greeted the U.S. president and first lady inside the stadium.

A milestone trip for Leonor and Sofía

For Leonor and Sofía, the trip to New York to watch La Roja win marked a major royal milestone. It was the first time the sisters had accompanied their parents to a men’s World Cup final.

The Princess of Asturias attended not only as heir to the throne, but also as the future commander in chief of Spain’s Armed Forces, having completed her military training this July at the Air and Space Academy in San Javier, Murcia.

Infanta Sofía, meanwhile, has stepped into a more prominent public role this year, with this official appearance following her first public speech alongside her parents and sister.

A nod to Spain’s 2010 World Cup victory

When Spain won its first World Cup in Johannesburg in 2010, Felipe and Letizia attended as the Prince and Princess of Asturias. Leonor was 4 and Sofía was 3, so the young royal sisters celebrated the historic victory from Spain.

After 16 years, the two princesses stood alongside their parents at another World Cup final, but this time witnessing the victory in person. The entire Spanish royal family wore red to show unity and national pride while once again highlighting their close family bond.
