Spain’s world champions were welcomed at Zarzuela Palace on Monday afternoon, only hours after the World Cup final, by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía. It was the first official tribute to the squad.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Royal Family were at the New York stadium on Sunday, sharing the VIP box with United States President Donald Trump and other leaders.
The final finished 1-0, Ferran scoring the winner. After the whistle, the four went down to the pitch to greet the players before the medals. Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino then presented the medals and the trophy.
On arrival, the squad, in suits and polos, were met by around 200 Zarzuela staff who formed a guard of honour. Royal Guard members led loud cries of “viva España”, drawing smiles from the players.
Coach Luis de la Fuente, backroom staff and federation president Rafael Louzán accompanied the players. In the gardens, the Royal Family greeted each champion, posed with the team, then the King addressed them. He hailed the scale of the triumph, the long road to a second star and their unity, joking that any tiredness after matches, travel and celebrations was welcome.
After a brief chat, the team headed to the Moncloa Palace to be received by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, then continued a traditional city tour with supporters.
