Queen Mary offers a rare glimpse inside the Danish royal family’s idyllic summer retreat

As King Frederik X and Queen Mary settle into their annual summer residence at Gråsten Palace, the Danish Royal House shared a series of peaceful photographs capturing the slower pace of royal life in southern Denmark.

The collection, simply captioned “Summer in Gråsten,” features everything from horseback rides through the countryside to elegant swans gliding across the palace grounds, offering followers an unusually intimate look at the family’s seasonal retreat. 

Among the sweetest moments are snapshots of the royal family’s two beloved Border Collies, Grace and Coco, relaxing beneath the shade of towering trees, while another image shows a graceful swan accompanied by fluffy cygnets near one of the palace’s lakes. 

A horseback riding photo showcases the breathtaking rolling landscapes surrounding the historic estate, highlighting why Gråsten has long been considered one of the monarchy’s favorite summer destinations.

In a photograph taken during the family’s arrival in Gråsten, the Australian-born queen embraced sporty elegance in a white tennis-inspired dress featuring navy trim, paired with sleek black sunglasses and minimal jewelry. 

King Frederik complemented her look in a light blue polo shirt and beige shorts, creating a coordinated palette that reflected the relaxed mood of their countryside retreat.

The understated ensemble is a departure from the glamorous gowns and tailored coats typically associated with royal engagements, proving once again that Mary’s off-duty wardrobe is just as influential as her formal style.

A beloved royal tradition:

The Danish royal family has spent summers at Gråsten Palace for generations. Nestled in southern Jutland, the historic residence has served as the family’s seasonal home since the 1930s and remains one of Denmark’s most beloved royal traditions.

During their stay, King Frederik and Queen Mary often greet local residents, enjoy outdoor activities and spend quality time together away from the demands of their official calendar. 

This year’s social media update offered a refreshing reminder that, beyond state banquets and royal ceremonies, some of the family’s happiest moments are spent surrounded by nature, loyal pets and the peaceful scenery of the Danish countryside.

While Gråsten Palace offers the Danish royal family a chance to slow down and enjoy a quieter pace of life, the end of summer will mark the beginning of another important royal engagement abroad.

Once their annual holiday concludes, Queen Mary and King Frederik are set to travel to Belgium for an official state visit, where they will represent Denmark at a series of ceremonial events, meetings with Belgian leaders and cultural engagements. The visit will also see the royal yacht Dannebrog play a central role in welcoming the couple before they resume their busy autumn schedule.
