The teams opened the series on Monday night with a back-and-forth battle that saw Kansas City escape with a narrow 4-3 victory. Alex Lange picked up his first win of the season, albeit sloppy, to improve to 1-5. Lange came in to close and blew the save by giving up two earned runs, but his team rallied to get the victory with a Nick Loftin walk-off single to bring home Josh Rojas in the bottom of the ninth. The Royals finished the game with nine hits on the night.
The Giants fell behind in the fourth after the Royals put up three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. They fought back, scoring twice in the top of the ninth to tie the game up. Heliot Ramos opened the scoring with his ninth homer of the year before Willy Adames blasted his 18th out of the park in the ninth to bring home Jung Hoo Lee. That’s where the scoring ended, however, and the Giants took their third loss in a row.
The Giants will give the start to Tyler Mahle on Tuesday night, while the Royals will counter with Luinder Avila. Mahle comes into the game with a record of 2-8 so far this season and an ERA of 5.31. Avila is currently 4-3 and brings an ERA of 5.08 into Tuesday’s game.
