NEED TO KNOW

  • Josh Duhamel says he feels a “culture shock” in New York City after spending time at his rural Midwestern cabin

  • Over a decade ago, the actor bought an empty parcel of land in Minnesota and has since built a rustic abode on the property

  • Duhamel says his family spends a “majority” of their time in Minnesota, with his kids enjoying a variety of outdoor activities

Josh Duhamel is opening up about the “culture shock” he feels in New York City after spending much of his time at his rural Minnesota cabin.

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE discussing season 2 of Netflix’s Ransom Canyon — which follows Duhamel as Texas rancher Staten Kirkland — the actor reflected on whether he himself is more of a country or city person. He stated: “I’m definitely country.”

While Duhamel admits he “loves” coming to major metros, like New York City, he says it’s a lot different from his rural Midwestern abode.

“It’s a shock, man, because I was just out at the cabin for the last couple of weeks… There’s nobody within 40 miles, really. There’s a couple of other cabins, but it’s just us out there,” he reveals. “And you come to New York City, it’s just people everywhere. So it’s a bit of a culture shock.”

He adds: “But I also love it and I feed off of it and I love to see what’s new and how much has changed since I lived here half a lifetime ago. But yeah, I would say I’m definitely more country than I am city.”

Duhamel, who welcomed a second child with wife Audra Mari in May, has frequently shared how much he would love to live in his Minnesota property full time. He previously spoke to PEOPLE about why he prefers quieter life in the Midwest when he isn’t among the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for work.

“I make movies and TV shows, and I love it. I truly do love it, but I had this calling to go and really do things with my hands again — fix things, make things and just do the basic things that we take for granted,” he said.

The Safe Haven star bought an empty parcel of land, located about an hour-and-a-half drive from Fargo, N.D., more than a decade ago. Over time, he slowly built a cabin there himself, eventually expanding the property with additional land. The rustic abode, which Duhamel referred to as his “doomsday cabin,” initially didn’t have electricity, running water or other modern amenities for a long time.

“We’re at a place now where it feels done. It’s completely livable now,” Duhamel added.

In a March interview with Extra TV, the actor revealed that his family spends a “majority of our time” in the land of 10,000 lakes. In addition to daughter Rocca de Leon, the couple shares an older son, Shepherd, 2. Duhamel also has one son, Axl, 12, with ex-wife Fergie.

“It’s very cold this time of year, so it’s not ideal, but I truly could live out there all year round if it weren’t for work,” Duhamel revealed. He said the kids get a “taste” of Los Angeles, but back at home, they get to enjoy the woods.

“They’re just exploring. They’re swimming. They’re jet skiing. They’re skiing. It’s a pretty special place,” he added.

In June, the actor listed his four-bedroom, four-bathroom L.A. property for $3 million. Less than two weeks later, the home went under contract, according to the property listing.
