A Supreme Court judge has fast-tracked the libel and defamation lawsuit brought by Jamaican ska icon, Derrick Morgan, against his daughter, reggae singer Queen Ifrica (born Ventrice Morgan), with a pre-trial hearing now scheduled for December 11 in the Supreme Court.

The accelerated timetable marks a major step forward in one of Jamaica’s most closely watched entertainment legal battles, as the Tougher Than Tough singer seeks damages over what he says are false and defamatory allegations made publicly by his daughter.

Morgan’s attorney, Charles ‘Advoket’ Ganga-Singh, declined to comment on the case, citing the sub judice rule, which restricts public statements that could prejudice ongoing court proceedings.

However, the ska legend’s son, Merrick Morgan, stated that he welcomed the court’s decision to move the matter forward swiftly, saying it would give his father an opportunity to defend his reputation.

“The judge may have taken into account my father’s advanced age and his medical condition, so we’re extremely grateful that the case has been called up so quickly so that my father can finally clear his name of these wild, defamatory accusations,” Merrick Morgan, a business consultant, said.

The development comes amid growing concern over the health and mortality of veteran Jamaican entertainers. More than 20 prominent figures in the music industry have died over the past 19 months. Derrick Morgan, now 86, is reportedly in good health despite being blind and a cancer survivor.

The lawsuit stems from a series of social media videos and media interviews published by Queen Ifrica in August 2023, in which she made serious allegations concerning an incident at her father’s Kingston home when she tried to reconnect with him as an adult. She has said that it was her personal experience with abuse that inspired her 2009 hit song, Daddy Don’t Touch Me There.

Following the video releases and interviews, Ganga-Singh issued a formal legal demand requesting that the singer retract the statements and remove the content from public platforms. According to the Morgan family, those demands were ignored, and additional videos were subsequently released. The family initiated defamation proceedings, with Queen Ifrica formally served in 2024.

On June 12, 2024, Ganga-Singh filed the suit in the Supreme Court of Jamaica, alleging “financial loss and damages”.

“The defendant made several defamatory statements, videos and and participated in several interviews hurling defamatory comments about the claimant, published such defamatory statements, videos and interviews and made said defamatory statements available to the public for posting, reposting, republication…which when heard, led the public to deduce that the claimant engaged in incest, rape and other sexual offences,” the suit said.

“Consequently, the claimant has suffered serious injury to his character and reputation, incurred financial loss and damages.”

Represented by attorney Seymour Stewart, Queen Ifrica has since appeared at a series of case management hearings as both legal teams prepare for what is expected to be a closely scrutinised court battle.

Queen Ifrica had no comment on the court matter when The Gleaner reached out to her on Sunday. Her career remains on track, with her most recent performance being at A Taste of Reggae Sumfest, on July 18. She is also enjoying the success of her latest single, Mom Like Me, which focuses on motherhood, family, and emotional resilience. Released ahead of Mother’s Day, the single moved beyond celebration and into reflection, highlighting the sacrifices, burdens, and unconditional love carried by mothers across different walks of life.

“Through vivid storytelling and grounded lyricism, the record speaks to realities experienced by families across geographic, cultural, and economic boundaries,” Queen Ifrica is quoted in a press release about the song. “Mother’s Day, for me, is a moment to acknowledge that our mothers play one of the biggest roles in our upbringing, and without them, the world would be a much darker place.”

Throughout the dispute, Derrick Morgan’s sons, including Merrick Morgan and music executive Dr Courtney Morgan, have stood firmly behind their father, maintaining that the purpose of the lawsuit is to clear his name through the judicial process.

With the matter now on an expedited track, the December 11 pre-trial hearing is expected to determine the next procedural steps before the case proceeds toward trial.
