The longtime K-pop agency and the studio behind the popular kids’ show “Catch! Teenieping” (2020–) will co-produce a 13-episode K-pop-themed animated series set for global streaming release in 2028.
SM Entertainment said Monday it is teaming up with local animation studio SAMG Entertainment to co-produce an animated series built around K-pop.
The companies signed a co-production agreement for an animated series tentatively titled “Superhero Idol Project” (translated).
The series is aimed at developing new animation intellectual property (IP) targeting the global market.
“Superhero Idol Project” is slated to be a 13-episode animated series combining a K-pop-inspired world with original storytelling, aimed at viewers from their teens to their 20s and 30s.
“We intend to blend artist IP with a superhero narrative in an attempt to draw both K-pop fans and animation audiences,” said SM.
Each episode will run about 20 minutes. Its release is targeted for 2028 through global streaming platforms.
SM will handle the planning and production of the series’ key music, as well as participate in the vocals and performances featured in the show.
“The companies plan to expand the project beyond animation production into an integrated IP business spanning music, concerts, artist management and video licensing,” SM said.
SAMG Entertainment, formerly known as SAMG Animation, was founded in 2000 and is best known for producing the wildly popular magical preschool series “Catch! Teenieping” (2020–).
SM Entertainment, founded in 1989, is an entertainment agency as well as a record label and music production company, producing major K-pop acts such as Girls’ Generation, EXO, SHINee, NCT, Red Velvet and aespa.
