The upcoming British period drama Majesty is in the news following unconfirmed reports that the show is looking to cast a trans woman as Queen Elizabeth I.
On March 31, British tabloid The Sun released an exclusive article claiming that the series is seeking a trans actress to play the famous monarch.
Meanwhile, in an April 2 article, Attitude shared an alleged casting call for Majesty, which seeks “someone to play the fantastic leading role of a young trans woman.”
While it might seem outlandish to some, the rumor that Queen Elizabeth I might have been trans has been around for some time.
A popular conspiracy theory known as the “Bisley Boy” legend theorizes that the real Elizabeth died of the plague at nine years old and was replaced by a young boy who looked enough like her to fool her father, King Henry VIII.
“Most historians dismiss the claims as misogyny motivated by the idea that no woman could be as strong or capable without actually being a man,” a “TV insider” reportedly told The Sun. “But it’s a theory which captures the imagination and appears to answer a lot of other questions around the unique queen.”
In 2022, academic Dr. Kit Heyam, published an essay on Shakespeare’s Globe theatre’s website, in which they argued that Elizabeth might have been non-binary.
“Elizabeth I described themself regularly in speeches as ‘king,’ ‘queen,’ and ‘prince,’ choosing strategically to emphasize their female identity or their male monarchical role at different points,” Heyam wrote.
First announced in 2024, Majesty is described as a “bold, intriguing reimagining of [Queen Elizabeth I’s] life based upon conspiracy theories which surrounded her as a youth.”
“Was the Virgin Queen hiding a profound secret?” the show’s synopsis continues. “And how did this overlooked, embattled princess become the most powerful ruler England has ever known?”
The six-part series was created and written by former Grey’s Anatomy showrunners Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, and William Harper, who teased in the show announcement that Majesty “is an emotional, funny, and contemporary-feeling alternate history about how three outsiders try to stay alive while hiding a secret that, if discovered, would rock England to its foundations.”
“Majesty allows us to have fun with history while illuminating who we are now,” they added. “This show is pure wish-fulfillment of how people devoted to the public good suddenly find themselves in a position to make a difference.”
