The Quintanilla family.

Selena Quintanilla is being celebrated in the new Netflix documentary Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, which features archival footage and interviews with her loved ones. From her early beginnings as a young girl realizing her gift for singing to her unprecedented success as a woman dominating Tejano music, the documentary, directed by filmmaker Isabel Castro, proudly shines a spotlight on Quintanilla’s legacy.

The film, which had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, is in many respects a love letter from the Quintanilla family to the singer’s newer generations of fans.

“Our family has recognized that Selena is a huge representation of who we are as Mexican Americans. She’s relevant still, 30 years after her passing,” Quintanilla’s older sister, Suzette, told the American Film Institute during a screening of the documentary. “There is a whole new, two generations actually … that are embracing her, discovering her and looking for her.”

When does Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy premiere on Netflix?

Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy premiered on Netflix on Nov. 17.

What is Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy about?

Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy charts Quintanilla’s early beginnings and rise to superstardom, as told by her family — her parents, Marcella and Abraham, sister, Suzette, brother, A.B. III, husband, Chris Pérez, and bandmates. Through the use of archival footage, the film tracks the family’s origins, from performances at their Tex-Mex restaurant in Lake Jackson, Texas, to their rise to the top of the Tejano music charts.

“As a filmmaker, I wanted to honor her extraordinary rise and enduring legacy while also giving a window into her life behind the stage,” Castro told Tudum. “Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before. I am deeply grateful to her family for their trust and support throughout this journey, and I can’t wait for a global audience to experience the magic, heart and community that Selena gave to all of us.”

Who was Selena Quintanilla?

Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas, to parents Abraham and Marcella. She had two older siblings: her sister, Suzette, and brother, A.B. III. Abraham first learned that Quintanilla could carry a tune when she was 6 years old, Suzette told People. It wasn’t long before all the pieces fell into place, and the Quintanillas formed the family band, Selena y Los Dinos, in 1981. Suzette was on the drums, A.B. III was on the bass, and Quintanilla was the lead vocalist.

Following years of success with Los Dinos, Quintanilla signed a solo contract with EMI Latin in 1989, the same year she released her self-titled debut album, Selena. In the years that followed, Quintanilla’s star continued to rise: She released three more albums, Ven Conmigo (1990), Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) and Amor Prohibido (1994), the latter of which included one of her biggest hits, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and earned her her first-ever Grammy Award in 1994 for Best Mexican/American Album. Her final album, Dreaming of You, which was also her first English-language LP, was released posthumously in 1995.

Recognized for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream, Quintanilla, who is affectionately known as the “Queen of Tejano music,” is considered one of the most influential Latin artists of all time. Tejano music reached its commercial peak in popularity in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, largely thanks to Quintanilla.

What happened to Selena Quintanilla?

Quintanilla’s life came to a tragic end on March 31, 1995, when she was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldívar, her employee. She was just 23 years old.

Saldívar was the founder and president of Quintanilla’s fan club, before being promoted to manager of the singer’s clothing boutiques, Selena Etc. She was fired, however, in early 1995, after the Quintanillas discovered that she had been embezzling money from both the fan club and boutiques.

On the day of her death, Quintanilla met Saldívar at the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, to retrieve financial documents that she’d previously refused to turn over. Saldívar then shot Quintanilla, who fled to the lobby and collapsed. Quintanilla named Saldívar as her attacker before losing consciousness.

Saldívar was found guilty of first-degree murder in October 1995 and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 30 years. She was denied parole in March 2025.

What has her family said about the documentary?

Suzette, who is also an executive producer of Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, told People that the documentary is dedicated to the dreamers.

“She found humor in everything, even when things were overwhelming,” Suzette said of her sister. “She never took herself too seriously, and you could feel the realness of who she was. I hope her story reminds someone that you can dream. This started off as a wild dream — and look what it represents now, so many years later.”

When Suzette approached Perez, the lead guitarist of Los Dinos, to be part of the project, he was immediately on board. Pérez, then 22, and Quintanilla, then 21, fell in love and married in 1992.

“Suzette calls me, I answer,” Pérez told the American Film Institute. “It was a simple choice for me. But at the same time, having to go through all the stuff again, it’s really heavy. But there’s so much beauty in it.”
