After several weeks of reruns, a new season of “Jeopardy!” is finally in swing.
The show’s Season 42 premiere, which aired Monday, saw the return of Jonathan Hugendubler, an adjunct professor and trivia host from Baltimore who defeated 16-game champ Scott Riccardi in the final game of Season 41.
The first game of the new season tested the players’ knowledge on a wide range of subjects — including biology, African history and a category called “Bicycles on the big screen” that referenced a Robert Redford classic.
Robert Redford gets a shoutout on ‘Jeopardy!’
The contestants were quick to buzz in on the following clue in the “Bicycles on the big screen” category: “‘Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head’ plays as Paul Newman hams it up on a bike in this film that co-starred Robert Redford.”
Caroline Paul, an HR specialist from Washington, D.C., was first to the buzzer and came up with the correct response: “‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’?”
The clue comes about a month after Redford’s 89th birthday, and a few months ahead of the final Sundance Film Festival in Utah that will honor the actor’s passion for independent storytelling, the Deseret News previously reported.
Another clue in the same category actually referenced a movie that premiered this past January at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
The $800 clue: “In a 2025 HBO Max doc, Paul Reubens said people riding bicycles around the WB lot inspired the stolen-bike plot of this movie.”
The answer: “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.”
The documentary “Pee-wee as Himself” was a Sundance hit and recently won the Emmy Award for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special category.
Who won the ‘Jeopardy!’ Season 42 premiere?
Although Paul knew her Robert Redford trivia, the victory ultimately went to Hugendubler, the defending champion who picked up steam when he chose to wager all of his $10,600 on a Daily Double — a big move that paid off.
‘Jeopardy!’ episodes now available for streaming
Season 42 of “Jeopardy!” has come with a major change: For the first time in the show’s history, new episodes are available for streaming, the Deseret News previously reported.
Episodes are available to stream the following day on Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and Peacock in the United States, and on the platform Crave in Canada, per the Deseret News.
“Jeopardy!” also recently won the Emmy Award for outstanding game show, bringing the quiz show’s grand total to 46 Emmys over the years, as the Deseret News reported.
