LOS ANGELES — Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” which is streaming on Netflix, has been nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

In his film, del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, an egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

Three of the nine nominations include Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The nominees, Kate Hawley, Mike Hill and Tamara Deverell, have all previously worked with del Toro.

The “Frankenstein” trio are picking up steam ahead of the Oscars. Recently, all three won BAFTA Film Awards in their perspective categories: production design, make-up and hair, and costume design.

Speaking on their Academy nominations, Deverell told Spectrum News that it’s really awesome to be nominated, though she believes artists shouldn’t compete.

“We are among so many great films this year,” she said. “We are all winners. I like to think of it that way. But it’s really an honor. We all worked really hard on the film with Guillermo and it was a work of love for him,” she said.

The three nominees said that Netflix was immensely supportive of their work on “Frankenstein.”

“They gave us the wings, and they let us fly… within a reasonable budget,” Deverell said with a laugh.

In creating the creature, Hill told Spectrum News it took up to ten hours to get Jacob Elordi — who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor — ready for filming.

“We would start at midnight and we’d be ready for the morning shoot,” he told Spectrum News. “I know I simply couldn’t do it. It is different for the makeup artist because you are applying the makeup and that’s what you love doing. I can do 20 hours and it wouldn’t faze me, but to be sat on that chair… That takes a will, and thankfully we had Jacob Elordi.”

For the film’s costumes, Hawley told Spectrum News that del Toro wanted a very modern feel even though the “Frankenstein” was a period film.

“I did due diligence looking at silhouettes and what was defining the silhouette of the time, and after that, it was the thematic images that came from the script that Guillermo wrote,” she said. “There were images of mythology, religion and, of course, nature. That started to embed itself in each characters’ identity with the fabrics we created… the colors and silhouettes.”

Hawley said at one point she let go of all the historical because del Toro wanted a more operatic and theatrical language.

“It was also about mood and tone… the melancholy and paintly feeling,” she added. “The clothes and textiles that we did were all chosen to support that.”

“Frankenstein” is now streaming on Netflix.
