In 1871, the renowned horse-riding “Queen Emalani” with 100 companions, set out from her Lāwaʻi estate on Kauaʻi and rode the paths above Waimea Canyon, visiting landmarks and vistas along the mountain trek. Poetic overtones of misty rains reflect the tragic loss of her beloved son and husband, while murmuring waters suggest solace in the merriment of music and hula presented by the royal entourage.
