According to a post by reliable scooper MyTimeToShineHello on X (formerly Twitter), a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines is reportedly in development. Director Mike Rianda helmed the 2021 animated sci-fi comedy.
It was produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller through Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, and Lord Miller Productions. The story follows a quirky family who must save humanity from a robot uprising.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines debuted on Netflix on April 30, 2021, after Sony sold its global distribution rights because of the pandemic’s effect on theaters. The movie quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched animated titles, reaching 53 million households in its first month.
It received wide acclaim for its animation, humor, and LGBTQ+ representation. The film earned nominations at the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Producers Guild Awards, and won several honors at the Annie and Critics Choice Awards.
In a 2021 interview with Fandango, director Mike Rianda hinted at the possibility of a sequel, saying, “We’ve got a lot of good ideas on the board, at least. I’ve been talking to people about it — some folks who are excited about that idea.”
