Swift and Gossip Girl actress Lively had been close since 2015, but that unravelled when Swift was dragged into Lively’s court battle with Justin Baldoni. The image-conscious Swift would likely not have appreciated receiving a court subpoena to testify about her conversations with Lively – nor to have her text messages to the actress read out in court. Nor, we suspect, would Lively have been chuffed at Swift’s claims that her communiqués about Baldoni began to feel like “a mass corporate email”.
Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver
This is not a snub as such, but while many of the indie-rock royalty with whom Swift has collaborated were at the wedding, the notoriously low-key Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, was seemingly absent.
Those on the guest list included the National’s Aaron Dessner, who produced her albums Folklore and Evermore, and Lucy Dacus, of the indie mega-group Boygenius,.
But where was Vernon – who duetted with her on the Folklore track Exile? Vernon is known to dislike the spotlight and may have preferred to keep a low profile rather than run a gauntlet of paparazzi and Swifties.
Hayley Williams
Paramore-frontwoman Williams and Swift both moved to Nashville to pursue music careers and became friends in 2009 after Swift’s mother, Andrea, suggested her daughter needed more female acquaintances in the business around her age. Williams appeared in the video for Bad Blood, and Paramore supported Swift during the Eras Tour.
So why was Williams not at the wedding? She wrapped her solo tour in Dublin on Tuesday – more than enough time to jet to New York.
Def Leppard
The Sheffield rockers are a favourite of Swift’s mother, Andrea, and famously performed with Swift in 2008 on the country-music show, CMT Crossroads.
“Taylor Swift’s album 1989 is called 1989 because that was the year she was born,” Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott told The Irish Times in 2023.
“Throughout 1988, she heard our music in her mother’s womb, non-stop. Her parents are big Def Leppard fans. Someone came up with a laptop to us and said, ‘Have you read this interview?’”
Said interview was with Swift, who, even then, was pretty big. Asked whether she would ever consider working with another band, she said: “There’s only one – Def Leppard.”
Having the band serenade the Swifties with Hysteria or Pour Some Sugar on Me would surely have raised the wedding to another level – but sadly, it seems not to have come to pass.
