Andrew Georgiou has admitted to fatally drowning his wife, Carol Georgiou, in their outdoor hot tub back in November 2024, after spending a night out together.
Andrew, 44, pleaded guilty to one count of murder during a hearing at Aylesbury Crown Court on Tuesday, December 9, for killing Carol on November 2, 2024, according to the BBC, Bucks Free Press and Birmingham Live.
After admitting to holding his wife under the water until she could no longer hold her breath, Andrew said he waited roughly 40 minutes to call 999 to report the emergency at their home in Milton Keynes, England.
In addition to admitting to killing Carol, Andrew also admitted to lying when he told dispatchers that he had walked outside and discovered his wife dead in the hot tub, per Bucks Free Press.
Andrew’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place on March 6, 2026.
“This is a tragic case and my thoughts, and the thoughts of Thames Valley Police, remain with Carol Georgiou’s loved ones at this difficult time,” Thames Valley Police Detective Inspector Michael Roddy said in a statement shared in a news release from the department.
It is not currently clear how long Andrew and Carol were married or if he offered a motive for the killing.
Andrew was initially arrested in July after police conducted an investigation into Carol’s death. When he was initially questioned, he told authorities that Carol got into the couple’s hot tub — which is located on the patio in the rear garden — by herself.
Following his arrest, Carol’s family released a statement in which they explained that she was a “wonderful daughter, sister, aunt and mother.”
“Carol was known for her kind heart, infectious smile, and willingness to help others,” the family continued in the statement, according to BBC. They also added that she “cherished her role as a mother to her sons and brought joy and laughter wherever she went.
“Her passing has left a deep void in our family, and we are struggling to imagine life without her,” the family continued in their statement. “We will always treasure her warm smile, loving embraces and witty sense of humor.”
Those who are found guilty of murder in England are always given a life sentence, according to the UK Government’s website. The website also states that those given a life sentence will be expected to remain behind bars or will follow strict rules for the remainder of their life upon their release.
If someone with a life sentence is released from prison, they will spend the rest of their life “on licence” within their community. “On licence” is similar to parole, and those who are released from prison must follow certain conditions including reporting to a probation officer. If they do not follow the guidelines set out for them, the person may be sent back to prison.
Another type of life sentence is a whole life order, which means that the convict will never be released from prison unless there are exceptional compassionate circumstances, per the UK Government’s website.
