AIKEN — Dozens of volunteers are putting the pieces into place for an annual May fundraiser to support Children’s Place, with the help of such establishments as Manuel’s Bread Cafe, Brink’s Tavern, The Village Cafe, Local Junction and Lanky’s on Laurens.
This year’s Celebrity Waiter Night festivities are mainly to be held Tuesday, May 12, in North Augusta and Monday, May 18, in Aiken, with one final gathering set for May 28, at Good Girl Brewing Co.
Celebrity Waiter Night, which dates back to the mid ’90s, has Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and Floyd and Green Jewelers as its top sponsors this year. Also on board are dozens of other organizations such as Savannah River Mission Completion, Tucker Orthodontics, Daybreak Adult Care Services, Wiland-Foley Advisory Group and several Aiken-area Walmarts.
“It’s a fun evening… and it helps us provide therapy for those in our program,” said Gerry Owen, co-founder of Crane and Owen Financial Solutions.
“While we get a lot of funding from the state, everybody wishes they could get more, so this kind of offsets some funding deficiencies that we may have from state resources.”
Owen, who is also a longtime member of the Children’s Place Board of Directors, added, “It’s just a night of giving back. I think it’s one of the larger single-night fundraisers in Aiken County and maybe even in the CSRA, and that just speaks to people wanting to help children, which is what our mission is.”
Children’s Place, as a resource center for families, is nationally accredited and focuses on “protecting, healing, and strengthening children and families impacted by trauma through education, treatment, and prevention,” as stated in promotional material, with emphasis on children from 6 months through 5 years of age.
