AMC Global Media April 29 announced that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. streaming rights to the new drama series, “Yaga,” starring Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix), Noah Reid (“Schitt’s Creek”), Clark Backo (“Letterkenny”), and Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry) in his first post-Heated Rivalry role.
The eight-episode, half-hour drama series will debut on AMC+ later this year.
Based on the play by Kat Sandler, who also serves as writer and showrunner, the new series, originally created for the Canadian streaming service Crave, reimagines the myth of Baba Yaga, as a contemporary mystery thriller.
YAGA follows Rapp (Reid), a private investigator who arrives in a small coastal town to investigate the disappearance of a young heir to a powerful fishery, Henry Park (Williams).
He finds himself at odds with an apprehensive local detective, Carson (Backo), a charismatic university professor with a taste for younger men, Katherine (Moss), and a labyrinth of enigmatic suspects, secret lives, and ancient magic.
The series also stars Sheila McCarthy (“Miniature Wife,” “Women Talking”), Megan Follows (Reign, The Way Home, “Little House on the Prairie”), Ezra Franky (“Untamed”), Patrick Gilmore (“Travelers,” “School Spirits”), Katharine Isabelle (“Hannibal,” “It’s a Wonderful Knife”), Hiro Kanagawa (“In Time”), Emilija Baranac (“The Wrong Paris,” “To All The Boys I’ve Love”), Georgia Acken (“Under the Bridge,” Switch), Anisa Harris (“Yellowjackets,” “School Spirits”), and Sam Krochmal (“The Vince Staples Show,” “Private Eyes West Coast”).
“Yaga is the kind of bold, genre-bending storytelling that we look for on AMC+ to complement our core franchises and super-serve our passionate and discerning fanbases,” said Courtney Thomasma, EVP of linear & streaming products for AMC Global Media. “Kat Sandler’s unique creative vision brings a fresh twist to the classic whodunit – weaving together elements of witchcraft, horror and mystery to deliver a captivating, character-driven story that viewers won’t want to miss.”
“Yaga is driven by an incredible ensemble—each performance deepens the story, which is constantly shifting beneath you,” said Mackenzie Donaldson, executive producer and VP of scripted television, Blink49 Studios. “We’re thrilled to bring it to U.S. audiences. It’s a gripping mystery that will stay with viewers long after it ends.”
AMC Global Media has a long history of successful and popular series set in the world of witchcraft and the supernatural – from “A Discovery of Witches,” starring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, and “Sanctuary: A Witches Tale,” based on the novel by V.V. James, to “Fallen,” based on Lauren Kate’s best-selling book series, and Anne Rice’s “Mayfair Witches,” starring Alexandra Daddario, both of which return for new seasons in 2027.
The show is produced by Blink49 Studios and Front Street Pictures in partnership with Crave, co- directors are David Frazee and Rachel Talalay. The series is executive produced by Mackenzie Donaldson, Andrew Miller and Moss and produced by Charles Cooper. The series is distributed globally by Sphere Abacus, a Bell Media company.
Separately, AMC Global Media and Sphere Entertainment Co. in Las Vegas are expanding their seasonal collaboration to include partnership opportunities combining Sphere’s annual holiday celebration “Sphere of Cheer” with AMC’s annual “Best Christmas Ever” December programming.
Following last year’s successful debut collaboration, the companies will partner again for a Halloween-themed multi-platform celebration throughout October, timed to their annual “Sphere of Fear” and “FearFest” events.
In December, AMC Global Media will collaborate with Sphere to secure branded activations on the Exosphere, the world’s largest LED screen, with custom content created by Sphere Studios, the in-house team driving technological and creative innovation. The content will also be displayed throughout AMC’s “Best Christmas Ever” programming across AMC platforms.
Sphere Entertainment is controlled by the family of Charles Dolan, whose son James Dolan is married to AMC Global Media CEO Kristin Dolan.
