Maggie Rose is giving fans two sides of herself at once. The acclaimed singer-songwriter has unveiled new singles “Weekend Lover” and “Used To It,” out now on One Riot, offering two distinct perspectives from her forthcoming album, ‘Half Moon,’ due August 14.
Both tracks mark the latest step in Rose’s ongoing run of work stretching the boundaries of Americana, soul, rock and roots music. The sultry “Weekend Lover” leans on Rose’s powerhouse vocals, carrying a confident swagger, a deep groove and a hook that sticks.
Rose opened up about the song’s origins: “The song evokes an after-after-party where everyone is uninhibited and the room is humming.” She’s described the track’s sensory details, from the taste of tequila to the steamy feel of Austin, Texas, framing it as an intimate love song about staying carefree with a partner even as life gets more serious.
“Used To It” takes a more introspective turn, opening the album with emotional depth and cinematic sound. Rose called it a natural fit for that role: “It felt like a natural album opener because of the shape of the song itself.” She’s said the song’s dynamics offer a preview of what’s ahead on the rest of the record, built around an all-or-nothing sentiment, either walk away or go all in.
‘Half Moon’ was co-produced by Lawrence Rothman, known for his work with Amanda Shires, and Daniel Tashian, known for his work with Kacey Musgraves. The album takes its name from its soul-searching centerpiece, written just two days before Maggie’s son, Graham, was born.
Ahead of the album, Rose already released lead single “Red Shoes,” and just dropped a striking new music video for “Gentle Man,” filmed at golden hour at Milestone Cattle Company Farm in Mt. Juliet, TN. The clip keeps things close to home, starring her husband and manager, Austin Marshall, alongside their one-year-old son, Graham.
Rose has plenty ahead, including an Austin City Limits TV taping in August and AmericanaFest in September, with touring continuing through the rest of the year. She’s currently on the road with Melissa Etheridge and Wynonna Judd, with additional dates on the books alongside Chris Stapleton, Lake Street Dive and more.
