If elephants never forget, I bet young princes who are mocked or bullied bear grudges for a lifetime. And just like with the contents of the Epstein Files and embarrassing photos of him crouched over a mystery woman – Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor may just be reaping the whirlwind of his own pompous arrogance.
It’s well known in royal circles that Prince William has never been the greatest fan of his boorish ‘Uncle Andrew’ and led the campaign in the Royal Family to excommunicate him and strip him of his titles. In the past it has been claimed Andrew was known to humiliate palace staff, such as forcing maids to climb four flights of stairs to open curtains and screaming “Do it!” as a catchphrase.
Meanwhile even in his teens – and before Andrew’s foolish friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein – aghast William viewed his uncle as an entitled oaf and ignoramus, despising the older royal’s bullying attitude.
Later it was suggested William held a grudge over his uncle’s unwelcoming and sometimes rude behaviour towards Catherine, when they first became an item.
Now newly unearthed and analysed footage from Sandringham dating back 26 years to Christmas 2000 reveals what appears to be a very awkward conversation between the 18-year-old future Prince of Wales and the then Duke of York.
Lip reader Nicola Hickling claims the young Prince of Wales seemed to be telling his uncle about life at school, with Prince Philip also listening in – before Andrew allegedly tells his nephew: “You’re a liar… and your friends as well.”
Then, interrupting William’s reply, according to the lip reader, Andrew adds: “I’ll tell you what, you talk some bull.”
A source close to the prince once told historian Andrew Lownie: “There have been tensions between [William and Andrew] for years, partly occasioned by Andrew being rude about Kate.”
When Andrew was arrested at Sandringham and quizzed by police on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February, you wonder if William even tried to hide a snigger.
Andrew denies any wrongdoing, but his years of friendship with Epstein look to have come home to roost. And when it comes to loved ones and family you reap what you sow.
When William eventually becomes king, you wonder if Andrew will wish – as he packs his bags at Sandringham clutching his hand-delivered eviction letter – he treated younger royals with a bit more kindness and respect.
