According to The Playlist, Andy Muschietti believes his DCAU flop, The Flash, is still worth watching. The famed horror director seems to blame most of the film’s poor ratings on its reputation alone. Instead of citing key aspects that were clearly wrong with the film, Muschietti blames the movie’s failure on its core audience. Interestingly, Muschietti is still expected to direct the upcoming DCU Batman title, Batman: The Brave and the Bold. While candidly speaking about the film to The Playlist, Muschietti had this to say:
“Of course, we had a publicity crisis with Ezra that is undeniable. And I’m not questioning that. But yeah, we love the movie. And actually, we really recommend it,” Muschietti told The Playlist.
In many ways, it appears like Muschietti is willing to blame anyone but himself for the film’s failure. The director even went as far as to reference Ezra Miller’s offscreen antics. However, these arguably brought more attention to the film than anything else. Instead of actually breaking down what could have been wrong with the film, Muschietti was quick to blame the movie’s poor box office showings on rumors and a lack of people willing to see the film.
Despite Muschietti’s claims, the film was originally expected to do quite well. Many fans were interested to see the horror director’s take on The Flash, and were excited to see how this new multiverse story would play out. However, the movie completely defied all fans’ expectations, and not in a good way. Many were deeply upset with how the film handled key characters and subplots. It became very apparent rather quickly that Muschietti does his best work in the horror genre.
The film attempted to capitalize on the fact that it starred Michael Keaton, returning as Batman for the first time in several decades. Yet, the film gave its characters barely any justice and somewhat squandered their massive opportunity. Several fans have even stated that they do not consider The Flash as part of Keaton’s Batman canon.
In the end, Andy Muschietti is right, The Flash did flop. However, when it comes to his reasoning, the popular IT director couldn’t be more wrong. Hopefully, he decides to stick to horror, which is where he clearly creates his best work. That said, he might have the chance to redeem himself with Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
