Anne Hathaway talks ‘Princess Diaries 3’ movie update

Anne Hathaway will return to her throne as Queen of Genovia soon enough.

Hathaway, 43, has given an update on “The Princess Diaries 3,” which was announced in 2024, admitting that while it is “not the update I think anybody wants,” there is still positive news to share.

“I’m busy making baby No. 3, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make ‘Princess Diaries 3,'” she told Andy Cohen on a July 16 episode of his SiriusXM show “Radio Andy.” But, “The Odyssey” actress added, “I can say, I think we had a story breakthrough. I think that we’re moving in the right direction.”

The film would come more than 20 years after its second installment and more than 25 years after an 18-year-old Hathaway and a 65-year-old Julie Andrews first starred in “The Princess Diaries.” Variety previously reported that the film had been in development since 2022, with “Crazy Rich Asians” writer Adele Lim set to direct.

“The script that we were working on had – we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one,” Hathaway continued.

Hathaway is also feeling really good about her upcoming addition. The actress confirmed she was pregnant with her third child in late June. She already shares sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6 – with her husband, actor and producer Adam Shulman.

Speaking to USA TODAY, Hathaway recalled one of her celebrity well-wishers, Barbra Streisand, who shared a message she wants to make a keepsake. “She just sent me a note. I’m like, ‘Well, we’re going to frame that one! Stick it in the nursery!'” Hathaway said. “She means so much to me.”
