The global box office is showing signs of recovery as anime continues to draw strong audiences. After several quiet weeks for major studio releases, Chainsaw Man: The Movie Reze Arc has emerged as a breakout hit. The new anime movie quickly surpassed key worldwide milestones within its opening run.
Chainsaw Man anime movie goes past $100 million worldwide
Sony and Crunchyroll’s Chainsaw Man: The Movie Reze Arc has surpassed $100 million globally after earning an estimated $17.2 million in its U.S. opening weekend (via Deadline).
The anime feature opened across 3,003 theaters and topped the domestic box office. It outperformed Black Phone 2 with $13 million in its second weekend, Paramount’s Regretting You with $12.9 million, and 20th Century Studios’ Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with $9.1 million. Deadline reported the film’s worldwide total reached $108 million, with about 40 percent of that coming from its earlier release in Japan.
It became the ninth anime movie to open above $10 million in North America. Premium formats such as IMAX and 3D contributed more than 60 percent of weekend earnings. The marketing campaign started at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July and continued with promotions at New York Comic Con. Exclusive footage, influencer screenings, and global Crunchyroll livestreams helped boost audience reach across 65 regional markets.
Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc follows Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie Infinity Castle, another Sony and Crunchyroll hit that earned around $666 million worldwide. Both films underscored anime’s growing influence at the global box office.
Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a demon hunter who merges with his devil dog Pochita. He gains the ability to turn parts of his body into chainsaws and hunts devils for survival. The film was produced by MAPPA and directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara.
It currently holds a 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore from audiences.
