Apple’s new iOS 27 software is on the way this autumn, including some improvements for Apple Music. 9 to 5 Mac has been running through some of the new additions.
The most noteworthy is a new algorithmic playlist called ‘Friends’ which will update every Thursday.
It’s described as “the best of what your friends are listening to” – thus adding another social element to Apple Music (as long as people’s friends are also using the streaming service, of course.)
The article also spotlights a new design for artists’ profile pages on Apple Music; improved transitions for the service’s AutoMix feature; extra-large homescreen widgets and the ability to run in landscape mode.
Earlier this year, Apple said that 2025 was its music service’s “best year ever” in terms of both listenership and new subscribers. Apple Music also broke its quarterly revenues record in the final quarter of that year (Apple’s fiscal Q1).
Apple didn’t release specific stats for any of that, but Midia Research recently estimated that Apple Music ended 2025 with a 12.6% share of global music subscribers – around 116.1 million people, narrowly ahead of YouTube Music’s 12.4% share, but behind Tencent Music (13.8%) and Spotify (31.4%).
