The sunnier, warmer weather means more filming in Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities — and with it come the movie stars.
A century ago, Clara “Babe” Jacobs was prolific in the industry: Known as the “Lux girl” in the soap ads, Jacobs (aka Clara Guiol) appeared in several productions, including with Carole Lombard and Stan Laurel.
In the late 1930s, she and her Canadian stuntman–husband, Carl, settled in Coquitlam where they hosted Hollywood’s elite at their Steelhead Ranch.
Today, the bare-land strata community is called River Springs and has streets named after the famous guests who visited the Coquitlam River retreat, such as Clark Gable, Errol Flynn and Elizabeth Taylor.
Coquitlam Archives has an online exhibit, called Behind the Scenes – Film in Coquitlam, that features Jacobs’ glamorous past.
