PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — It’s survival of the fittest at the box office this weekend, and the Predator is back.
“Predator: Badlands” takes the top spot
The iconic alien hunter returns in Predator: Badlands, marking the franchise’s first theatrical release since 2018’s The Predator. According to BoxOffice Pro, the film is projected to debut between $24–30 million. If it opens closer to $24 million, that would signal a softer start, but a $30 million launch would show fans are turning out strong for the sci-fi action series.
“Regretting You” holds strong in its third frame
Coming in second is Regretting You, continuing its quiet but steady run. BoxOffice Pro estimates it will bring in $3–4 million in its third weekend. The romantic drama has held better than expected thanks to strong word of mouth and targeted appeal, though competition and a sluggish overall marketplace could limit its growth.
Black Phone 2 takes third place
Rounding out the top three is The Black Phone 2. The horror sequel is projected to earn $3–4 million, slipping a bit faster than some expected, but still performing solidly for a late-October release. It continues to draw in fans of the first film, helping it stay afloat in a crowded fall box office.
Jack’s Review: Bugonia
This week, I checked out Focus Features’ newest release, Bugonia, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is a darkly funny and suspenseful ride centered on a conspiracy theorist named Teddy, played by Jesse Plemons, who kidnaps a pharmaceutical CEO, played by Emma Stone, because he’s convinced she’s secretly an alien plotting to destroy Earth.
It’s just as bizarre as it sounds, and that’s what makes it great. Emma Stone absolutely shines (yes, she really shaved her head for the role), but the real standout is Jesse Plemons. His performance as Teddy is one of the best of the year. It’s hilarious, anxious, and unpredictable all at once.
What makes Bugonia so engaging is how it constantly toys with your perception. One moment you’re convinced she’s an alien, the next, you’re not so sure. It’s a wild, clever ride from start to finish. I’m giving it a 9 out of 10.
